Martha's-Vineyard
is an island 20 miles long and 10 miles wide that is situated off the southern coast of Cape Cod, five miles out to sea. Also known simply as "the Island," or "the Vineyard," it makes up most of Dukes County, Massachusetts (with the rest of the county consisting of Cuttyhunk and the other Elizabeth Islands.) Martha's Vineyard is primarily a summer colony with a year round population of about 15,000 people (which swells to approximately 100,000 in the summer months.) Six towns are located on the island: Aquinnah, Oak Bluffs, Chilmark, Tisbury, West Tisbury and Edgartown. Known for its' unspoiled beauty and charm, Martha's Vineyard has become one of the country's most prestigious summer resorts and is home to many movie stars, writers and artists. Many scenic beaches are located here - the northern and eastern sides of the island offer protected, shallow stretches while the rumbling surf is found on the south side. Five lighthouses are on the island - all located on the north side overlooking Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Sound and over the entrance to Edgartown Harbor and Cape Poge. You'll find a variety of quaint shops and restaurants on Martha's Vineyard, along with lots of things to do such as golf, bicycling, fishing, boating and sailing, horseback riding, glider rides, historic tours and nature walks.

Martha's Vineyard has a four-season climate, with milder winters and cooler summers than places further inland. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean brings changeable weather to this region. It has plenty of sunshine, but rain and fog are not uncommon - even in the summertime. Spring is a short season on Martha's Vineyard and snow is possible even in April. Summers are quite warm and humid, but with cooling ocean breezes. Fall is often the most pleasant with mild, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Extreme weather is possible, such as severe thunderstorms, nor'easters and hurricanes. However, hurricanes generally weaken to a tropical storm by the time they reach Martha's Vineyard.
