Chilmark
is an affluent town located on the island of Martha's Vineyard in southern Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the population of Chilmark was 843 permanent residents. There is a fishing village by the name of Menemsha located on the northern end of the town. Menemsha borders the village of Aquinnah (Gay Head.) The town of Chilmark was confirmed in 2005 to have the highest property value of any city or town in the state of Massachusetts. Martha's Vineyard is an island 20 miles long and 10 miles off the southern coast of Cape Cod. Altogether, six towns are located on the island: Chilmark, Aquinnah, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, West Tisbury and Edgartown. Known for its' unspoiled beauty and charm, Martha's Vineyard has become one of the country's most prestigious summer resorts and is home to many movie stars, writers and artists. Many scenic beaches are located here - the northern and eastern sides of the island offer protected, shallow stretches while the rumbling surf is found on the south side. Five lighthouses are on the island - all located on the north side overlooking Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Sound and over the entrance to Edgartown Harbor and Cape Poge. Activities on the island include golf, biking, fishing, boating, sailing, horseback riding, and hang gliding.

Chilmark Weather & Climate

Martha's Vineyard has a four-season climate, with milder winters and cooler summers than places further inland. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean brings changeable weather to this region. It has plenty of sunshine, but rain and fog are not uncommon - even in the summertime. Spring is a short season on Martha's Vineyard and snow is possible even in April. Summers are quite warm and humid, but with cooling ocean breezes. Fall is often the most pleasant with mild, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Extreme weather is possible, such as severe thunderstorms, nor'easters and hurricanes. However, hurricanes generally weaken to a tropical storm by the time they reach Martha's Vineyard.
