Edgartown
is a historic town located on Martha's Vineyard in southeastern Massachusetts. As of 2010, the population was 4,067. The town was one of the original settlements on Martha's Vineyard, founded in 1642. Edgartown was a major whaling port in the 1700s and 1800s, but is now a popular summer tourist destination. Stately, historic Captain's Homes line both sides of Water Street along the harbor, while other homes in Edgartown predate the whaling era. Vincent House (1672) is the oldest house on the island, and the Benjamin Smith House (1760) now houses the Vineyard Gazette. The old Whaling Church is now home to a performing arts center, and other attractions include the Edgartown Light at the entrance to the harbor and several public beaches. Swimming, fishing, boating, sailing, bicycling, hiking, horseback riding and golf are all popular activities in Edgartown. Felix Neck, which is about three miles outside the town center provides marked trails and conservation education and wildlife management programs. All of the quaint shops and restaurants of Martha's Vineyard are just minutes away from Edgartown.

Martha's Vineyard has a four-season climate, with milder winters and cooler summers than places further inland. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean brings changeable weather to this region. It has plenty of sunshine, but rain and fog are not uncommon - even in the summertime. Spring is a short season on Martha's Vineyard and snow is possible even in April. Summers are quite warm and humid, but with cooling ocean breezes. Fall is often the most pleasant with mild, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Extreme weather is possible, such as severe thunderstorms, nor'easters and hurricanes. However, hurricanes generally weaken to a tropical storm by the time they reach Martha's Vineyard.
