Lake-Tashmoo
is a 279-acre coastal lake located on the north shore of Martha's Vineyard. It lies within walking distance of Vineyard Haven, which is the main village in the town of Tisbury. Lake Tashmoo's waters come from an underground spring. Those springs were the source of the first commercially bottled water in the late 1800s. An inlet connects the lake to Vineyard Sound. In 1938, the US Army Corps of Engineers dredged and stabilized the opening and constructed jetties, creating the current estuary and making it suitable for navigation. Lake Tashmoo provides shelter for geese, ducks and swans, and is a lovely sight to watch lobster boats as they head out to work their traps. There is a public beach at the lake along the Vineyard Sound that is open daily, dawn to dusk. A lifeguard is on duty in season, and activities include swimming, kayaking, snorkeling and picnicking. Vineyard Haven/Tisbury, where Lake Tashmoo is located, has a population of approximately 4,000. Tisbury was first incorporated in 1671, but the port and harbor had various names over the years, with Vineyard Haven finally being the one that stuck. Also, the official post office name for the Town of Tisbury is Vineyard Haven - therefore the two names are interchangeable. Locals generally refer to the village as Vineyard Haven.

Martha's Vineyard has a four-season climate, with milder winters and cooler summers than places further inland. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean brings changeable weather to this region. It has plenty of sunshine, but rain and fog are not uncommon - even in the summertime. Spring is a short season on Martha's Vineyard and snow is possible even in April. Summers are quite warm and humid, but with cooling ocean breezes. Fall is often the most pleasant with mild, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Extreme weather is possible, such as severe thunderstorms, nor'easters and hurricanes. However, hurricanes generally weaken to a tropical storm by the time they reach Martha's Vineyard.
