Vineyard-Haven
is the main village within the town of Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard in southern Massachusetts. The population is approximately 2,000, but the entire population of Tisbury is around 4,000. Seasonally, the population increases as many people own summer homes in Vineyard Haven. Technically, Vineyard Haven is a "census-designated place" and only one part of the town of Tisbury, but locals commonly refer to the whole town as Vineyard Haven. Quaint shops and fine restaurants line the streets of the town center, and ferries arrive and depart daily from the Steamship Authority Wharf, carrying passengers to the mainland. Other attractions in Vineyard Haven include Owen Park, War Veterans' Memorial Park, the Old Schoolhouse Museum (circa 1828,) and the Vineyard Playhouse, which was built in 1833 as a Methodist meeting house. There are lots of photography opportunities at Vineyard Haven, including the West Chop Lighthouse, the drawbridge on Beach Road, and Tashmoo Lake. The 279-acre Tashmoo Lake is a working harbor, but also offers a beach that is open daily, dusk to dawn. Activities at the lake include swimming, sailing, kayaking, snorkeling and picnicking. An inlet connects the Lake Tashmoo to Vineyard Sound. In 1938, the US Army Corps of Engineers dredged and stabilized the opening, creating the current estuary and making it suitable for navigation.

Martha's Vineyard has a four-season climate, with milder winters and cooler summers than places further inland. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean brings changeable weather to this region. It has plenty of sunshine, but rain and fog are not uncommon - even in the summertime. Spring is a short season on Martha's Vineyard and snow is possible even in April. Summers are quite warm and humid, but with cooling ocean breezes. Fall is often the most pleasant with mild, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Extreme weather is possible, such as severe thunderstorms, nor'easters and hurricanes. However, hurricanes generally weaken to a tropical storm by the time they reach Martha's Vineyard.
