Tom-Nevers
is a neighborhood on the south shore of Nantucket, about five miles from the town center. It's from enough from the crowds to be rural in nature, yet a ten minute bus or car ride to all the amenities of the island. Tom Nevers has a mix of both permanent and summer residents. Bike paths meander through the area and along the beaches and many different species of birds nest in the natural habitat. A ring of conservation land and secluded beaches surround Tom Nevers, and in summer, the higher elevations offer cooler breezes than the rest of the island. Some consider the Tom Nevers area to have the best surfing and fishing on the island. It's also near two beautiful golf courses, and a playground is located on a former Navy base at the end of Tom Nevers Road. If you need a little more excitement, hop a bus, or bicycle into town and enjoy the shops, restaurants, museums and galleries. Nantucket Island has something for everyone. History, culture, fine dining, live entertainment, non-stop shopping, antiques, and lots of fun outdoor activities. If you're visiting in July, the island celebrates Independence Day is a big way, with family events held all up and down the cobblestoned Main Street. As night falls, a spectacular fireworks show is held on Jetties Beach. Other special events on Nantucket include a Daffodil Festival in spring and Christmas Stroll.

Nantucket Island has a moderate climate with four distinct seasons. The surrounding Atlantic Ocean moderates the climate of the offshore islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, making it milder than that of inland Massachusetts. Rain and fog are not uncommon on Nantucket Island - even in the summertime. Spring is a short season and snow flurries are possible even in April. Summers are quite warm and humid, but with cooling ocean breezes that keep it from becoming too uncomfortable. Fall is very pleasant with mild, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Extreme weather is a possibility every few years, including nor'easters and hurricanes. However, hurricanes generally weaken to a tropical storm by the time they reach the island.
