Monomoy is an eight-mile long remote, sand "island" that extends southwest from the town of Chatham on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It's home to the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge. Monomoy Island was settled as early as 1710 when a tavern for sailors was opened at the site of Hospital Pond, then known as Wreck Cove. A small village of about 200 residents included the tavern and a public school. The deep harbor at Monomoy was a good fishing spot where cod and mackerel was dried and packaged for markets in Boston and New York. Lobsters also provided both income and food for the residents of the village, who would take them to the mainland to sell for two cents apiece. The village was abandoned after a hurricane struck in 1860, and it was designated a Federal Wildlife Refuge in 1970. Later storms carved a deep channel between Monomoy and the mainland. The spot serves as an important migratory stop for many species of birds. Today Monomoy has no residents, no electricity and no paved roads. There is a lighthouse on the island, along with a keeper's quarters, cast iron light tower and brick generator house. One might spot sharks from Monomoy, as the F/V Exyduzit crew recently spotted and tagged Atlantic Great White Sharks in the area. These sharks have been seen eating black seals near the beach shore.

Monomoy Weather & Climate

Nantucket Island has a moderate climate with four distinct seasons. The surrounding Atlantic Ocean moderates the climate of the offshore islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, making it milder than that of inland Massachusetts. Rain and fog are not uncommon on Nantucket Island - even in the summertime. Spring is a short season and snow flurries are possible even in April. Summers are quite warm and humid, but with cooling ocean breezes that keep it from becoming too uncomfortable. Fall is very pleasant with mild, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Extreme weather is a possibility every few years, including nor'easters and hurricanes. However, hurricanes generally weaken to a tropical storm by the time they reach the island.
