Spencer
is a town located in Worcester County in central Massachusetts. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,688. Settled in 1717 by Nathaniel Wood, the town of Spencer is rich in history and natural beauty. It was formed from a part of the town of Leicester and is a few miles east of Worcester city. Spencer is home to Saint Joseph's Abbey, a vocational discernment retreat for Roman Catholic men. Nearby attractions include the Worcester Music Festival, the oldest music festival in the nation, the Worcester Art Museum (New England's second largest art museum,) the Higgins Armory Museum and Union Station, and the FDR American Heritage Center Museum. Worcester County is also home to Elm Park, the nation's oldest park and one of the first of its' kind in the country. Both the City Common and Elm Park are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The nearby city of Worcester offers a variety of dining experiences, with everything from brewpubs to gourmet dining. Worcester County is known for its' tranquil beauty and outdoor activities include swimming, hiking, biking, horseback riding, golf, boating and skating.

Central Massachusetts has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are cold and snowy and summers are warm and humid. There is a large seasonal temperature variance in central Massachusetts, because places further inland do not have the moderating influence of the ocean. West-central Massachusetts has colder winters and cooler summers than areas along the coast. Summer thunderstorms are common, on average about 30 per year. Nor-easters (winter storms with winds coming from the Northeast) can drop a foot or more of snow. In summer, central Massachusetts is slightly more humid than the coast. Autumn brings crisp air and sunny days. Spring, on the other hand, is usually wet and cloudy.
