Shrewsbury
is a town in Worcester County in Central Massachusetts that is historically unusual due to the fact that it grew as a suburb of the neighboring town of Worcester from the start. It is home to Lake Quinsigamond, which is currently considered the fourth best natural body of water for rowing in the world. The lake is situated between the two towns (Worcester and Shrewsbury) and is four miles long and has a surface area of approximately 772 acres. Quinsigamond State Park runs two sites where the lake borders the town of Worcester. Regatta Point offers facilities for swimming, sailing, picnicking, fishing, and crew regattas. Lake Park provides a picnic area, swimming beach and tennis courts and other recreational opportunities. There are eight islands on Lake Quinsigamond that are mostly owned by private citizens. Two islands are connected to land via a bridge and the largest island, Drake Island, is state owned. Shrewsbury offers a variety of shopping and restaurants and everything from world-renowned museums and theater to historic sites can be found nearby. Worcester is home to Elm Park, the oldest park in the nation, and other outdoor activities in the area include hiking, biking, horseback riding, golf and skating. Worcester is also home to the regions only professional hockey team - the Worcester Ice Cats.

Central Massachusetts has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are cold and snowy and summers are warm and humid. There is a large seasonal temperature variance in central Massachusetts, because places further inland do not have the moderating influence of the ocean. West-central Massachusetts has colder winters and cooler summers than areas along the coast. Summer thunderstorms are common, on average about 30 per year. Nor-easters (winter storms with winds coming from the Northeast) can drop a foot or more of snow. In summer, central Massachusetts is slightly more humid than the coast. Autumn brings crisp air and sunny days. Spring, on the other hand, is usually wet and cloudy.
