Nantucket
is an island located south of Cape Cod, about 30 miles out to sea. Its often called The Gray Lady, due to the regular fog that shrouds the island. Only three by nine miles, Nantucket is a place of unspoiled beauty and New England charm - a major tourist destination for the state of Massachusetts. The entire island of Nantucket is a designated National Historic District and contains one of the highest concentrations of pre-Civil War structures in the United States. The island's beginnings in western history date back to its' sighting by the Norsemen in the 11th century. For almost 100 years (from the mid-1700s to the late 1830s,) it was the whaling capital of the world, but it wasn't until the 1880s that it became an ideal summer vacation destination for many Americans. Once established, however, tourism became the principal source of income for the island. Nearly forty percent of Nantucket is protected conservation land, and the island is known for its' beautiful, wide sandy beaches. Bicycling is a good way to explore Nantucket where the cobblestone streets are lined with fine shops and boutiques, art galleries and museums. Guided tours of the island are also available. Restaurants abound, whether formal or informal (fresh Nantucket seafood is, of course, part of the whole experience of the island.) Special events on Nantucket Island include a Daffodil Festival in the spring and the Annual Christmas Stroll (usually held the first weekend in December as part of a month long Nantucket Noel Celebration.) Getting around the island is easy - seasonal shuttle buses run May to October to the beaches and other locations. Bicycles are a popular means of transportation, and rental cars, taxis and limousine services are also available.

Nantucket Weather & Climate

Nantucket Island has a moderate climate with four distinct seasons. The surrounding Atlantic Ocean moderates the climate of the offshore islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, making it milder than that of inland Massachusetts. Rain and fog are not uncommon on Nantucket Island - even in the summertime. Spring is a short season and snow flurries are possible even in April. Summers are quite warm and humid, but with cooling ocean breezes that keep it from becoming too uncomfortable. Fall is very pleasant with mild, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Extreme weather is a possibility every few years, including nor'easters and hurricanes. However, hurricanes generally weaken to a tropical storm by the time they reach the island.
