Katama
is an area of the town of Edgartown on the south shore of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. In the late 1800s, it was the terminus of the Martha's Vineyard Railroad and the location of the Mattakeeset Lodge. Katama has remained a popular summer resort since that time. Today, a resort named Mattakeeset is located at the southernmost point of Katama, immediately adjacent to the beach.This resort has been here since the mid-1970s and a second resort opened in Katama in 2001 called Winnetu. Other attractions in the Katama area include The Farm Institute, which is a non-profit farm that provides education and farm-related community events for children of all ages. Katama Bay is a popular place for fishing, kayaking, windsurfing and kiteboarding, and The Boat Landing is a boat launch into Katama Bay that will accommodate 20-foot boats. Other attractions in the area include the Edgartown Light, Vincent House (1672), which is the oldest house on the island, and the Benjamin Smith House (1760) now houses the Vineyard Gazette. Swimming, fishing, sailing, bicycling, hiking, golf and shopping are all popular activities on Martha's Vineyard. The area of Katama is mostly residential but just minutes to all the quaint shops and restaurants on the island.

Martha's Vineyard has a four-season climate, with milder winters and cooler summers than places further inland. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean brings changeable weather to this region. It has plenty of sunshine, but rain and fog are not uncommon - even in the summertime. Spring is a short season on Martha's Vineyard and snow is possible even in April. Summers are quite warm and humid, but with cooling ocean breezes. Fall is often the most pleasant with mild, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Extreme weather is possible, such as severe thunderstorms, nor'easters and hurricanes. However, hurricanes generally weaken to a tropical storm by the time they reach Martha's Vineyard.
