Aquinnah
is a town located on Martha's Vineyard in southwest Massachusetts. Until 1998 the town was called Gay Head, and most locals still refer to it as such. As of 2010, the population was 311, of which, about one-third are Native American Indians. The site which is now Aquinnah was one of the earliest sites for whaling on the east coast. First, done from the shore by the Wampanoag Indians; later it became the major industry of Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and New Bedford. Aquinnah is known for its beautiful red clay cliffs and for its "clothing optional" beach - one of the few remaining nude beaches in the United States. Today the cliffs are ecologically protected and it's forbidden to climb them or even to touch the clay. This is strictly enforced, with a police officer coming by often on an ATV. The cliffs are also patrolled by a member of the Wampanoag tribe, who explains to people the importance of the cliffs, and how they feature prominently in the tribe's spirituality and myths. Other nearby attractions include the scenic beaches of Martha's Vineyard, five lighthouses, a variety of quaint shops and great seafood restaurants. Martha's Vineyard has a four-season climate, with milder winters and cooler summers than places further inland. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean brings changeable weather to this region. It has plenty of sunshine, but rain and fog are not uncommon - even in the summertime. Spring is a short season on Martha's Vineyard and snow is possible even in April. Summers are quite warm and humid, but with cooling ocean breezes. Fall is often the most pleasant with mild, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Extreme weather is possible, such as severe thunderstorms, nor'easters and hurricanes. However, hurricanes generally weaken to a tropical storm by the time they reach Martha's Vineyard.
