Winthrop
is a seaside town located in Suffolk County in east-central Massachusetts. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,497. It's situated on a peninsula at the north entrance to Boston Harbor near the Logan International Airport. Beautiful views of the Boston skyline can be seen to the west, and a panoramic view of the harbor and ocean to the east. Winthrop is one of the oldest towns in the United States, settled by English Puritans in 1630. The town was named for John Winthrop, one of the first settlers and first governors of the new colonies. John's son Deane Winthrop's home, built in 1637, is now a museum. Winthrop offers miles of sandy beaches, parks and marinas, along with a quaint downtown of shops and businesses. Winthrop Shore Drive is a historic parkway built in 1899 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The main beach of the town, Winthrop Beach, is located along this parkway. It's the centerpiece of the town, open year round from dawn to dusk. There are several other beaches in town, and other points of interest include Deer Island, Lewis Lake Park, Fort Heath and Fort Banks. The town of Winthrop is also host to several special events throughout the year. The Strawberry Festival is held in June at the historic Deane Winthrop House and a special bonfire, parade and fireworks is held on the 4th of July. Others include an annual sandcastle building contest, summer concert series at Ingleside Park, a fall fair and craft show and a holiday tree lighting festival.

Southeastern Massachusetts , along the coast, has a continental climate with maritime influences. Some areas are classified as humid continental, and others are humid subtropical. Summers are warm and humid with the possibility of thunderstorms. Occasionally these storms are severe with hail and heavy downpours. Winters are cold and snowy, with most snowfall occurring between December and March. Spring and autumn are mild, but changeable depending on the wind direction and jet stream. Cool sea breezes are common, especially in spring. Fog is also commonplace, especially in spring and early summer. Tropical storms or hurricanes are possible, especially in early autumn, but not common.
