Arlington
is located just six miles northwest of Boston, bordered by Winchester on the north, Medford and Somerville on the east, Cambridge on the south and Lexington to the west. As of the 2000 census, the town had a population of 42,389 residents. A historic town founded over 350 years ago, Arlington is the birthplace of Uncle Sam, the location of the first public children's library and the site of most of the fighting at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The village of Arlington was originally settled in 1635 under the name Menotomy. The name was changed to Arlington in 1867 and today the town has preserved many of its' historical buildings and recreated a picturesque town common. It has easy access to metropolitan Boston, which makes it a very desirable place to live for many who work in the city. A 65-acre reservoir area (known as the "Res,") in northwest Arlington contains 28 acres of water. It's a man-made pond originally constructed in 1871 by damming the Munroe Brook that flows from Lexington. The Reservoir empties into Mill Brook, which flows through Arlington and empties into the Lower Mystic Lake, which then feeds the Mystic River. In 1981 a separate swimming area was constructed along the northern side of the Reservoir with filtered water and a sandy beach, and it's also a popular walking and bird watching spot year round. Several other parks and recreational areas are located in Arlington and offer walking/jogging and bike paths, playgrounds, fishing, basketball courts and baseball diamonds, picnic areas and green space.

Northeast Massachusetts has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Rainfall averages 40 inches and is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year. Snowfall can exceed 100 inches in a season. Winter is cold in the northeast coastal region, but much colder further inland. Springs are usually wet and cloudy. Autumn is mild and comes earlier than other regions in the U.S. Extreme weather such as severe thunderstorms, nor'easters and hurricanes are a possibility. Hurricanes generally weaken to a tropical storm by the time they reach the state, however. A nor'easter is a winter storm with winds coming from the northeast that can bring heavy snow and strong winds.
