Boston is the capital and largest city in Massachusetts, and one of the oldest cities in the country, founded in 1630. It is well known for its role in the American Revolution, but it's also one of the most beautiful and culturally significant cities in the nation. The city is best explored on foot, although riding one of the city's trolleys is another fun way to see the sites. The trolleys make a circle around key tourist sites for a day pass of around $20.00. Several historic sites relating to the Revolutionary War are preserved as part of Boston National Historical Park. Many are found along the Freedom Trail, which is marked by a red line or bricks embedded in the ground. Also along the Freedom Trail is the Boston Common, with the Boston Public Garden adjacent to the Common. Boston Common is also part of the Emerald Necklace, which is a series of parks in the city. In winter, the Frog Pond at Boston Common doubles as a popular ice-skating rink and other major parks are located along the banks of the Charles River, near Castle Island, Charlestown, the Dorchester shoreline and East Boston. The Back Bay district includes landmarks such as the Boston Public Library, Copley Square and the John Hancock Tower. Notable neighborhoods of Boston include Beacon Hill, Chinatown and Downtown Crossing. Other world-renowned attractions in the city include the Museum of Fine Arts, the John F. Kennedy Library, the New England Aquarium, Franklin Park Zoo and the Boston Athenaeum. There are also two self-guided walking tours: Harbor Walk, which is designed to allow visitors to walk the entire shore of Boston Harbor, and the Black Heritage Trail.

Boston Weather & Climate

Southeastern Massachusetts , along the coast, has a continental climate with maritime influences. Some areas are classified as humid continental, and others are humid subtropical. Summers are warm and humid with the possibility of thunderstorms. Occasionally these storms are severe with hail and heavy downpours. Winters are cold and snowy, with most snowfall occurring between December and March. Spring and autumn are mild, but changeable depending on the wind direction and jet stream. Cool sea breezes are common, especially in spring. Fog is also commonplace, especially in spring and early summer. Tropical storms or hurricanes are possible, especially in early autumn, but not common.
