Wellfleet
is located 75 miles out to sea on the outer end of Cape Cod, with over sixty percent of the town being inside the Cape Cod National Seashore Park. The town is also home to the 1,000-acre Massachusetts Audubon Society Wildlife Sanctuary and the Cape Cod National Seashore Headquarters. Wellfleet's permanent population of about 3,500 residents swells to over 17,000 during the summer months. The town offers miles of ocean and bayside beaches, many spring-fed ponds and a beautiful harbor that is a kaleidoscope of sailboats, fishing boats, trawlers and yachts. The National Seashore altogether comprises over 43,000 acres of shoreline and upland, including a 40-mile long stretch of pristine beach, six swimming beaches and 11 self-guided nature trails. A variety of historic structures are also within the seashore, including lighthouses and various Cape Cod-style homes. The town of Wellfleet is known for its' fresh seafood, especially the famous "Wellfleet Oysters," and some of the Cape's finest fishing is found here - by boat, ocean surfcasting or in the fresh water ponds of the area. Also, a swim in one of the warm water kettle ponds of Wellfleet is a special treat for visitors. The Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater is located right next to the pier and downtown Wellfleet is home to many shops, restaurants and art galleries. The town is host to an Oyster Fest, usually held in October, which features live music, arts and crafts, and of course, lots of fresh oysters. The town of Wellfleet will not disappoint with its' picturesque vistas and quaint New England seaside charm.

The north tip of Cape Cod has a four season climate that is generally more moderate than inland Massachusetts. Extreme conditions such as blizzards and hurricanes are possible, but not typical. Due to the moderating affect of the ocean, temperatures in Cape Cod are usually a few degrees cooler in summer and a few degrees warmer in winter. Spring comes late and is chilly, but autumn is mild and remains warmer than places further inland. This is due to the ocean remaining warm after the summer season. The Cape Cod region has the lowest precipitation of anyplace in New England. A tropical storm happens once every 5 or 6 years, with very high winds and heavy rain. On average, the area is hit by a hurricane once every 11 or 12 years.
