Orleans
is a resort community nestled just past the "elbow" of Cape Cod between Nauset Beach on the Atlantic side and tranquil Skaket Beach on Cape Cod Bay. It is bordered by Eastham on the north, the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Chatham and Harwich on the south and Brewster and Cape Cod Bay on the west. This part of the Outer-Cape is home to the Cape Cod National Seashore and is a bit more secluded than other parts of Cape Cod. Orleans offers something for everyone - the quaint town center has galleries, shops and fine restaurants (offering delicious fresh seafood.) The historic district offers museums and live theater. Skaket Beach's calm waters are perfect for small children, and Stellwagen Bank is one of the best places on Cape Cod for whale watching. With over 559 miles of beautiful coastline, there is no better place than Cape Cod for swimming, sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, boating, fishing, shelling - the list goes on and on. Hiking and biking are available on the Cape Cod Rail Trail and the National Seashore has historic lighthouses, over 43,000 acres of shoreline, salt marshes, clear, freshwater kettle ponds and uplands, as well as a wide variety of wildlife supported by these habitats. Other nearby attractions include the Eastham Windmill (the oldest on Cape Cod,) the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, the Woods Hole Science Aquarium (a great rainy day activity) and day trips to historic Plymouth and the city of Boston.

Orleans Weather & Climate

The Cape Cod region has a four season climate with maritime influences. The weather here is generally more moderate than inland Massachusetts. Extreme conditions such as blizzards and hurricanes are possible, but not typical. Due to the moderating affect of the ocean, temperatures in the Cape Cod region are usually a few degrees cooler in summer and a few degrees warmer in winter. Spring comes late and is chilly, but autumn is mild and remains warmer than places further inland. The Cape Cod region has the lowest precipitation of anyplace in New England. Tropical storms occur once every 5 or 6 years, with very high winds and heavy rain. On average, the area is hit by a hurricane once every 11 or 12 years.
