Lieutenant-Island
is a tidal island located off the beaten path on Cape Cod near the town of Wellfleet. The island is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway and an old wooden bridge. This is a very quiet area of the Cape, with the 1,000-acre Massachusetts Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary located on the south side of Lieutenant Island. Attractions include a salt marsh, birdwatching, a sandy beach for swimming and picnicking and hiking trails. At high tide, the water sometimes surrounds the little wooden bridge to Lieutenant Island, but at low tide the water goes out pretty far, leaving flats for walking and shelling. Other recreational activities in the area include boating and fishing, biking, wildlife viewing, windsurfing, parasailing, jet skiing and water skiing. The ocean beaches of Cape Cod National Seashore are just a ten-minute drive from Lieutenant Island and the town of Wellfleet is a thriving artists community that also offers shops, boutiques and great restaurants (the town is known for its fresh oysters.) Directions from Boston to Lieutenant Island: Take route 95 South, then Route 3 South. Continue on to Route 6 after the Sagamore Bridge. About 4 miles after the National Seashore Visitor Center in Eastham, turn left on Lieutenant Island Road Drive until you reach the wooden bridge to Lieutenant Island.

Lieutenant Island Weather & Climate

The north tip of Cape Cod has a four season climate that is generally more moderate than inland Massachusetts. Extreme conditions such as blizzards and hurricanes are possible, but not typical. Due to the moderating affect of the ocean, temperatures in Cape Cod are usually a few degrees cooler in summer and a few degrees warmer in winter. Spring comes late and is chilly, but autumn is mild and remains warmer than places further inland. This is due to the ocean remaining warm after the summer season. The Cape Cod region has the lowest precipitation of anyplace in New England. A tropical storm happens once every 5 or 6 years, with very high winds and heavy rain. On average, the area is hit by a hurricane once every 11 or 12 years.
