Rockland
is a small town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, located just ten miles inland from the Atlantic coast and approximately 20 miles southeast of Boston. As of the 2000 census, the population of Rockland was 17,670 residents. Situated midway between Boston and Plymouth, the city of Rockland adjoins the historic towns of Weymouth, Hingham, Abington and Hanover. The town was settled as a farming community in the early 1700s and was incorporated as the town of Abington in 1712. The area that is now the town center was developed in East Abington in 1812 and was a thriving commercial center by the time of the Civil War. In 1874, fueled by anger over taxes raised for a school in Abington Center, East Abington seceded and the "new" town of Rockland was formed. Today it is considered a suburb of Boston and is home to banking offices and light industry. All of the fine cultural attractions of Boston are just minutes from Rockland, including the New England Aquarium, Museum of Fine Arts, the John F. Kennedy Library, Harbor Walk and the Boston Athenaeum. A short drive south takes you to the historical settlement of Plymouth, "America's Hometown," where you can visit Plymouth Rock and the recreations of Plimouth Plantation and the Mayflower. Rockland makes a fine location from which to explore the area - off the beaten path, yet near all the fine restaurants, shopping and many attractions that Plymouth County has to offer.

Southeastern Massachusetts , along the coast, has a continental climate with maritime influences. Some areas are classified as humid continental, and others are humid subtropical. Summers are warm and humid with the possibility of thunderstorms. Occasionally these storms are severe with hail and heavy downpours. Winters are cold and snowy, with most snowfall occurring between December and March. Spring and autumn are mild, but changeable depending on the wind direction and jet stream. Cool sea breezes are common, especially in spring. Fog is also commonplace, especially in spring and early summer. Tropical storms or hurricanes are possible, especially in early autumn, but not common.
