Provincetown
is a summer resort and arts center located at the tip of Cape Cod in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Also known as "P-town," it's known for its' beautiful beaches and numerous art galleries, restaurants and great shopping. The village of Provincetown was incorporated in 1727, but was visited by explorer Samuel de Champlain as early as 1605. It was the site of the Pilgrims' first landing before they moved across the Bay to Plymouth and the signing of the Mayflower Compact took place in Provincetown's harbor. Provincetown remained a small fishing village throughout most of the 18th century, but after the American Revolution, it began to grow rapidly and soon became known as the fishing and whaling center of Cape Cod. By the 1890s, Provincetown had also attracted quite a resident population of writers and artists - a tradition that continues today. Attractions include the Provincetown Museum and Pilgrim Monument, built in 1910 to commemorate the landing of the Mayflower. A climb to the top of the monument offers one of the best views on the entire Cape. Nearby, the Cape Cod National Seashore includes a variety of recreational opportunities, including six swimming beaches, eleven self-guided nature trails, lighthouses and a variety of other historic structures.

The north tip of Cape Cod has a four season climate that is generally more moderate than inland Massachusetts. Extreme conditions such as blizzards and hurricanes are possible, but not typical. Due to the moderating affect of the ocean, temperatures in Cape Cod are usually a few degrees cooler in summer and a few degrees warmer in winter. Spring comes late and is chilly, but autumn is mild and remains warmer than places further inland. This is due to the ocean remaining warm after the summer season. The Cape Cod region has the lowest precipitation of anyplace in New England. A tropical storm happens once every 5 or 6 years, with very high winds and heavy rain. On average, the area is hit by a hurricane once every 11 or 12 years.
