Plum-Island
is an eleven-mile long barrier island located on the extreme northern coast of Massachusetts. It is split between the towns of Newbury, Newburyport, Rowley and Ipswich. The island is named for the hundreds of beach-plum bushes that grow wild on its' shores. Plum Island is situated where the Parker River and Merrimack River flow into the Gulf of Maine. Most of the island (at the southern end) is the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and the northern portion of the island is densely populated with year-round and seasonal residents. The architecture of Plum Island is an interesting mix of old beach cottages, saltbox houses, modest residential homes and oceanfront estates. The entire oceanfront is public beach, although much of it is accessible only by foot. There are boardwalks in the Wildlife Refuge that take you through the dunes and out onto the beach. The island side faces the spectacular tidal marshes, which are especially beautiful at sunset. Plum Island is outstanding for wildlife viewing and birding with over 800 species of birds, plants and animals. Birders from all over the world visit Plum Island. Sandy Point, on the southern tip of the island, is a State Park and great for swimming, sunning and tidepooling. Fishing is also popular on the island, where you can cast your line off the shore or take an offshore excursion or charter a boat. The north end of Plum Island offers spectacular views of the inlet to the Merrimack River and a historical lighthouse. Parking, for a fee, is available at the Refuge, the Point or in private parking lots.

The southwestern tip of Maine, just across the New Hampshire state line, enjoys a four-season climate without the frigid temperatures of the northeastern part of the state. While the weather can change quickly in Maine (from sunny to stormy,) the seasons are pretty predictable. Fall is a favorite time of the year for many, with mild sunny days and crisp cool nights. With its proximity to the ocean, this part of Maine enjoys mild summers with cool ocean breezes and temperatures that rarely go over 80 degrees. Rain is possible anytime of the year. Visitors should come prepared for anything - temperatures in Maine have been known to swing 20 degrees in less than an hour. At times, the wind along the coast picks up, making it seem even cooler.
