Essex
is a rural community, established in 1819 as one of the first shipbuilding centers in New England. It is located on Cape Ann, approximately 30 miles north of Boston. The town is well known throughout country as the oldest continuously operating shipbuilding area in the U.S., with over 4,000 two-masted vessels. The town maintains its' maritime heritage with the Essex Shipbuilding Museum and also with the bodies of water surrounding the town, such as the Chebacco Lake, Essex River and the Atlantic Ocean. Essex is also well known for its' antique shops and gift shops (over 30) and its' many seafood restaurants where you can sample delights such as fresh Essex steamer clams. Cape Ann is a lovely destination that offers a variety of sandy beaches along a rocky shoreline. Two public beaches are in the town of Essex: Crane Beach and the beach at Chebacco Lake. The main beaches of Cape Ann are Good Harbor Beach and Wingaersheek Beach, both in the town of Gloucester. Other attractions in Essex include cruises on the River, whale watching, golf, kayaking and sightseeing in Cape Ann's other maritime villages. The town of Essex holds an annual ClamFest in September each year and the Taste of Essex, held in May, features offerings from most of the area's best restaurants. Southeastern Massachusetts , along the coast, has a continental climate with maritime influences. Some areas are classified as humid continental, and others are humid subtropical. Summers are warm and humid with the possibility of thunderstorms. Occasionally these storms are severe with hail and heavy downpours. Winters are cold and snowy, with most snowfall occurring between December and March. Spring and autumn are mild, but changeable depending on the wind direction and jet stream. Cool sea breezes are common, especially in spring. Fog is also commonplace, especially in spring and early summer. Tropical storms or hurricanes are possible, especially in early autumn, but not common.
