Ipswich
is centrally located in northeastern Massachusetts, approximately 12 miles north of Salem and 28 miles north of Boston. It is one of the oldest towns in the nation, founded in 1633. The early residents of Ipswich relied on farming, fishing and shipbuilding until lace making and the making of stockings became a hometown industry (the first stocking machine, smuggled from England, arrived in Ipswich in 1822.) By the turn of the 20th century, Ipswich was a thriving town with the largest stocking mill in the country. In the 1950s, it began to grow as a suburban community with many residents traveling to and from Boston by train and automobile. Today, Ipswich is a culturally and economically diverse town of about 12,000 permanent residents. The town has a large number of beautifully restored 17th and 18th century homes, and other attractions include Crane Beach and Castle Hill, extensive salt marshes, the Ipswich River and two nearby state forests. Shellfishing and other waterfront activities are popular things to do in Ipswich, along with hiking, biking, horseback riding and snow sports. Old Ipswich Days is an annual event held the last weekend of July and includes a crafts fair, book sale, downtown sidewalk sales and an evening block dance on Market Street. An annual Chowder Fest is also held in Ipswich each year, usually in the month of September, and offers chowder samplings, live music, face painting and other fun family activities. The Visitor's Center is located on South Main Street, inside the historic Hall Hasket House, also called the Little Red House, built in 1819.

Southeastern Massachusetts , along the coast, has a continental climate with maritime influences. Some areas are classified as humid continental, and others are humid subtropical. Summers are warm and humid with the possibility of thunderstorms. Occasionally these storms are severe with hail and heavy downpours. Winters are cold and snowy, with most snowfall occurring between December and March. Spring and autumn are mild, but changeable depending on the wind direction and jet stream. Cool sea breezes are common, especially in spring. Fog is also commonplace, especially in spring and early summer. Tropical storms or hurricanes are possible, especially in early autumn, but not common.
