Manchester
is one of the communities of Cape Ann, bordered by Essex on the north, Gloucester on the east, and the Atlantic Ocean on the south. This quiet residential town boasts a rich history and a quaint town center that wraps around one of New Englands finest small harbors. The Town of Manchester was included in a grant of land to the Massachusetts Bay Colony made in 1629 by Charles I who signed their charter in that year. In 1845 a new phase opened in the town when the first summer resident, poet Richard Dana, built his vacation home here. Manchester quickly became a very fashionable summer home destination for the wealthy. In 1868 the original Town Hall was built, while the public library was given to the town by the Hon. T. Jefferson Coolidge, a summer resident in 1886. Today, Manchester has retained its history and maritime heritage, while developing a new suburban residential community. Cape Ann is filled with art galleries and antique shops, and has a variety of museums, including the Cape Ann Historical Museum, Hammond Castle Museum and the Sargent House Museum. The Schooner Adventure is a 69-year-old Gloucester fishing schooner that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was recently designated by the National Park Service as a National Historic Landmark. Manchester is near the main beaches of Cape Ann, Good Harbor and Wingaersheek Beach, and there are thousands of acres of land in the area for exploring, hiking, biking and cross-country skiing.

Southeastern Massachusetts , along the coast, has a continental climate with maritime influences. Some areas are classified as humid continental, and others are humid subtropical. Summers are warm and humid with the possibility of thunderstorms. Occasionally these storms are severe with hail and heavy downpours. Winters are cold and snowy, with most snowfall occurring between December and March. Spring and autumn are mild, but changeable depending on the wind direction and jet stream. Cool sea breezes are common, especially in spring. Fog is also commonplace, especially in spring and early summer. Tropical storms or hurricanes are possible, especially in early autumn, but not common.
