Gloucester
is America's oldest fishing port, located at the center of Cape Ann, less than an hour from Boston. The main portion of Gloucester is an island, connected only by two bridges. The other towns of Cape Ann are Rockport, Manchester and Essex. Since 1623, Gloucester has been a major world harvester of quality seafood and a picturesque working port - today it is also one of the premier art colonies in New England. Gloucester was first named "Le Beauport," by Samuel de Champlain for its beautiful harbor and rocky shoreline. This port city is comprised of a mosaic of small communities - each with their own unique character. In summertime, visitors flock to the city for its' beaches and outdoor activities, fresh seafood and whale watching. Cape Ann has a variety of beaches, and the two main ones (with suitable parking) are Good Harbor Beach and Wingaersheek Beach, which are both located in Gloucester. There are several museums in town, including the Sargent House Museum, the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center, the Hammond Castle Museum and the Schooner Adventure, a 69-year-old Gloucester fishing schooner that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was recently designated a National Historic Landmark. Parts of the popular movie, "The Perfect Storm" were filmed in and around Gloucester, and many of the buildings, etc. are easily recognizable. The city also hosts many special events throughout the year, such as St. Peter's Fiesta, the Horribles Parade, Gloucester Waterfront Festival and Gloucester Schooner Festival. A special Independence Day Celebration in Gloucester includes fireworks, parades, bonfires, concerts and more.

Southeastern Massachusetts , along the coast, has a continental climate with maritime influences. Some areas are classified as humid continental, and others are humid subtropical. Summers are warm and humid with the possibility of thunderstorms. Occasionally these storms are severe with hail and heavy downpours. Winters are cold and snowy, with most snowfall occurring between December and March. Spring and autumn are mild, but changeable depending on the wind direction and jet stream. Cool sea breezes are common, especially in spring. Fog is also commonplace, especially in spring and early summer. Tropical storms or hurricanes are possible, especially in early autumn, but not common.
