Westport is a lovely New England town located in southeastern Massachusetts about 8 miles west of New Bedford and 54 miles south of Boston. It is bordered by Fall River on the north and west; Dartmouth on the east; the Atlantic Ocean on the south; and Tiverton and Little Compton, Rhode Island, on the west. As of the 2010 census, the population was 15,532. Westport is a community of tranquil farms, beautiful scenery, small businesses and family homes and people who live from the water. It is just minutes to one of New England's most popular beaches - Horseneck Beach State Reservation. Spread across almost 600 acres of barrier beach and salt marsh, Horseneck Beach is situated at the western end of Buzzards Bay. The southwest-facing, two-mile long beach provides a welcome relief from the sweltering summer temperatures inland and offers excellent wind surfing, swimming, boating, fishing and picnicking opportunities. Behind the dunes near Gooseberry Neck, which is a rocky headland at the eastern end of the Reservation, is a 100-site campground. Swimming is permitted only at designated beaches in the reservation and pets are not allowed on the beaches and swimming areas. Many other state parks and reservations are near Westport, including Fall River Heritage State Park, Freetown-Fall River State Forest and Dighton Rock State Park.

Westport Weather & Climate

Southeastern Massachusetts has a continental climate with maritime influences. Some areas are classified as humid continental, and others are humid subtropical. Summers are warm and humid with the possibility of thunderstorms. Occasionally these storms are severe with hail and heavy downpours. Winters are cold and snowy, with most snowfall occurring between December and March. Spring and autumn are mild, but changeable depending on the wind direction and jet stream. Cool sea breezes are common, especially in spring. Fog is also commonplace, especially in spring and early summer. Tropical storms or hurricanes are possible, especially in early autumn, but not common. Most hurricanes weaken by the time they reach Massachusetts.
