Tyringham
is a small village of approximately 350 residents located in Berkshire County in Southwestern Massachusetts. It is approximately 16 miles south of Pittsfield and 137 miles west of Boston. Originally settled in 1737 as Housatonic Township No. 1, it encompassed what is now Tyringham and the village of Monterey (Monterey incorporated as a separate town in 1847.) In 1792, a Shaker settlement was established along the southwestern headwall of Tyringham Valley. In its' prime, the settlement was home to over 200 Shakers who lived in three clusters of buildings. Today, five buildings survive in the Tyringham Shaker Settlement Historic District, located along a mile and a half on Jerusalem Road between Shaker Pond and Breakneck Road. The buildings are private and not open to the public. Another interesting attraction in Tyringham is Santarella, the thatch-roofed "Gingerbread" cottage built by Henry H. Kitson, sculptor of the Lexington Minuteman. For outdoor recreation, Tyringham is near more than twenty state parks and forests, including October Mountain State Forest, Beartown State Forest, Wahconah Falls State Park and Bash Bish Falls State Park. Just a few of the activities to enjoy hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, canoeing, swimming, fishing, boating and cross country skiing. Tyringham Cobble is a two-mile loop trail that runs to the summit of Cobble Hill, 400 feet above the valley floor. It features wildflowers and several outcrops that offer sweeping views of Tyringham Valley and the village below.

Tyringham Weather & Climate

Southwest Massachusetts has four very distinct seasons and is classified as having a humid continental climate. Summers are hot and humid and winters are cold and snowy. Spring and autumn are mild, with autumn being the sunnier of the two seasons. A humid continental climate is marked by large seasonal temperature variances. It can be as hot has 90 degrees in summer and as cold as zero degrees in winter. The temperature difference increases the further inland one goes, away from the moderating influence of the ocean. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer, with average rainfall at about 40 inches per year. Snowfall can exceed 100 inches in a year. Other severe weather includes nor'easters, blizzards, and ice storms.
