Becket
is an "upland" town located 19 miles southeast of Pittsfield and 120 miles west of Boston. It is most well known as being home to the world famous Jacob's Pillow Dance Theater. This historic town was originally laid out in 1735 along with three other towns along the wilderness trail that connected the lower Housatonic Valley with the Connecticut Valley and Boston. The town of Becket was incorporated in 1765 with lumber being the primary product. The population has grown from 414 residents in 1776 to approximately 1,700 today. The West Branch of the Westfield River, which is considered by anglers to be one of the best trout streams in the Berkshires, forms part of Becket's northern boundary. Several children and youth camps have been built in the Becket area in the past several years, along with many seasonal vacation homes. Jacob's Pillow Dance Theater is known as one of the most important cultural landmarks for dance in the county. Ted Shawn, the noted modern dancer, bought the 18th century farm in 1930 to rehearse his Denishawn dance company, touring the U.S. with his unique folk and ethnic approach to dance, eschewing staid European mannerisms and trying to educate a whole country about the possibilities of dance. Among the troupe were such legends as Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Barton Mumaw and Charles Weidman.

Western New York, including The Berkshires, has a moderate four-season climate. The first significant snowfall usually occurs in December, but it varies from year to year. Some years there is no snow or ice until after the first of the new year, and the temperatures near The Hudson River stay quite mild. March is the month to look for the first signs of spring, although cool temps can linger throughout the month. Summers are hazy, warm and humid. September can be mixed with either clear, cool Canadian air or humid, warm air with intense downpours. October is possibly the most beautiful month in the Berkshires with warm, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Perfect weather for enjoying the foliage. Typically, colors peak the first three weeks of October.
