South-Orleans
is a resort community located in the "elbow" region of Cape Cod, between the villages of Orleans and Chatham. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and Cape Cod Bay to the west. Also considered the "Outer Cape Region," this area is home to the Cape Cod National Seashore and the towns of Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown. The South Orleans area is secluded and quiet and offers miles and miles of beautiful beaches. Activities include swimming, shelling, sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, boating, fishing and more. Stellwagen Bank is one of the best places on Cape Cod for whale watching and hiking and biking are available on the Cape Cod Rail Trail. The National Seashore has over 43,000 acres of shoreline, historic lighthouses, salt marshes, freshwater kettle ponds, uplands and a wide variety of wildlife. The nearby town of Orleans boasts fine seafood restaurants, museums, live theater and quaint shops and galleries. Other nearby attractions include the Eastham Windmill (the oldest on Cape Cod,) the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, the Woods Hole Science Aquarium (a great rainy day activity) and literally dozens of museums, historic sites, tours and family amusement parks. South Orleans is also convenient for day trips to historic Plymouth and the city of Boston.

The Cape Cod region has a four season climate with maritime influences. The weather here is generally more moderate than inland Massachusetts. Extreme conditions such as blizzards and hurricanes are possible, but not typical. Due to the moderating affect of the ocean, temperatures in the Cape Cod region are usually a few degrees cooler in summer and a few degrees warmer in winter. Spring comes late and is chilly, but autumn is mild and remains warmer than places further inland. The Cape Cod region has the lowest precipitation of anyplace in New England. Tropical storms occur once every 5 or 6 years, with very high winds and heavy rain. On average, the area is hit by a hurricane once every 11 or 12 years.
