Chatham
is one of the beautiful communities of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, located on the "elbow" of the Cape. It is known for its excellent saltwater fishing, gorgeous beaches and seal cruises. Those who enjoy boating and sailing will also love. Chatham is one of the oldest townships of Cape Cod, settled in 1656 by a handful of Pilgrims, with many of their descendants still living in the town. Originally a farming community, its inhabitants found deep-sea fishing more lucrative and today, small boat, deep-sea fishing is very important to the town's economy. Covering an area of approximately seventeen square miles, Chatham is a combination of past and present; old fashioned and picturesque yet with many modern facilities. Attractions in the town include the Chatham Railroad Museum, set in an 1887 railroad depot. The Old Atwood House Museumfeatures a number of exhibits that celebrate the local culture and history, and Mayo House is a small cottage that has been on Main Street since 1818. Tour guides on hand to answer questions. Pleasant Bay and Orleans border Chatham on the north, the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Nantucket Sound on the south, and Harwich on the west. It is 17 miles east of Hyannis and 89 miles Southeast of Boston.

The Cape Cod region has a four season climate with maritime influences. The weather here is generally more moderate than inland Massachusetts. Extreme conditions such as blizzards and hurricanes are possible, but not typical. Due to the moderating affect of the ocean, temperatures in the Cape Cod region are usually a few degrees cooler in summer and a few degrees warmer in winter. Spring comes late and is chilly, but autumn is mild and remains warmer than places further inland. The Cape Cod region has the lowest precipitation of anyplace in New England. Tropical storms occur once every 5 or 6 years, with very high winds and heavy rain. On average, the area is hit by a hurricane once every 11 or 12 years.
