Salem
is a historic seafaring town located in Essex County about 16 miles north of Boston. Most people associate the city with the Salem witch trails of 1692, but the town's most important contribution in history was for its' often used port for East Indies trade and for the leading role the city played in the American China trade. This colorful coastal city has a lot to offer visitors with its' rich maritime history and amazing stories of witch trials, historic architecture and other attractions. The history of the town begins when a group of settlers, led by Roger Conant, set out from rocky, stormy Cape Ann to establish a more permanent settlement inland. They found a sheltered, fertile place at the mouth of the Naumkeag River and in 1629 the settlement was named Salem (for Shalom, the Hebrew word for "peace.") In January of 1692, the daughter and niece of Reverend Samuel Parris of Salem Village became ill. The village doctor was called in and when the young girls failed to improve, a diagnosis of bewitchment put into motion the events that would ultimately result in the famous witch trials. Attractions in the city today include the Salem Witch Museum and the Salem Witch House. The town also has a rich literary history. It is home to The House of the Seven Gables, made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne, who was born in Salem in 1804. Hawthorne worked in the Customs House by Pickering Wharf, which served as inspiration for the opening scene in The Scarlet Letter. Other attractions in Salem include Historic Derby Street with its' Federal style mansions, the Salem Marketplace, Salem Maritime National Historic Site, Salem Wax Museum and the Peabody Museum of Salem.

Southeastern Massachusetts , along the coast, has a continental climate with maritime influences. Some areas are classified as humid continental, and others are humid subtropical. Summers are warm and humid with the possibility of thunderstorms. Occasionally these storms are severe with hail and heavy downpours. Winters are cold and snowy, with most snowfall occurring between December and March. Spring and autumn are mild, but changeable depending on the wind direction and jet stream. Cool sea breezes are common, especially in spring. Fog is also commonplace, especially in spring and early summer. Tropical storms or hurricanes are possible, especially in early autumn, but not common.
