Middlefield
is a tiny town located in Hampshire County in western Massachusetts. The population in the 2000 census was 542. In 1774, five families traveled from Hebron, Connecticut and settled on a rugged, high plateau that became what is now Middlefield. When the town incorporated in 1783, there were 68 families here. Middlefield lies within a beautiful region of peaceful hills and river valleys. The Westfield River runs through the area and is a designated National Wild & Scenic River. The surrounding pristine wilderness area offers fishing, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, scenic drives and wildlife watching. Attractions in Middlefield include the Historic Museum, which is housed in the second floor of the restored town hall. The museum features exhibits that reflect the early life in Middlefield up through the 19th and early 20th centuries. Exhibits include clothing, tools, china, glass, toys, furniture, quilts, photos, maps, postcards, and telephone equipment - all that previously belonged to families from Middlefield. Other nearby attractions include Glendale Falls, Keystone Arches, and the annual Middlefield Fair.

Western New York, including The Berkshires, has a moderate four-season climate. The first significant snowfall usually occurs in December, but it varies from year to year. Some years there is no snow or ice until after the first of the new year, and the temperatures near The Hudson River stay quite mild. March is the month to look for the first signs of spring, although cool temps can linger throughout the month. Summers are hazy, warm and humid. September can be mixed with either clear, cool Canadian air or humid, warm air with intense downpours. October is possibly the most beautiful month in the Berkshires with warm, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Perfect weather for enjoying the foliage. Typically, colors peak the first three weeks of October.
