Dalton
is a small town located in Berkshire County in northwest Massachusetts. The population is approximately 7,000. The town of Dalton lies just east of the city of Pittsfield on Route 9. It's also the site of Wahconah Falls State Park. Dalton was incorporated in 1784 as a rural, industrial city with several mills built along the East Branch of the Housatonic River. Farming was also a major industry of the area. In 1801, the paper mill, Crane & Co. was established, which produced bank note paper. Today, it's still the largest employer in town and manufactures all sorts of paper products, and has been the only supplier of paper for the Federal Reserve Note since 1873. The Appalachian Trail runs through the town of Dalton, and it's surrounded by the Berkshire Mountains, with Tully Mountain rising to the south of town. Recreational activities include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, canoeing, picnicking, camping and golf. Sugar Hill, in Dalton, is a historic mansion that originally belonged to Winthrop Murry Crane, the owner of the Crane Paper Company. The 23-room mansion has been restored to its original charm, with marble fireplaces, a grand staircase and custom wood finishes. Other things to do in the area include outdoor concerts, farmers markets and flea markets and visiting the Hancock Shaker Village in nearby Pittsfield.

Western New York, including The Berkshires, has a moderate four-season climate. The first significant snowfall usually occurs in December, but it varies from year to year. Some years there is no snow or ice until after the first of the new year, and the temperatures near The Hudson River stay quite mild. March is the month to look for the first signs of spring, although cool temps can linger throughout the month. Summers are hazy, warm and humid. September can be mixed with either clear, cool Canadian air or humid, warm air with intense downpours. October is possibly the most beautiful month in the Berkshires with warm, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Perfect weather for enjoying the foliage. Typically, colors peak the first three weeks of October.
