Duxbury
is a beautiful little coastal town located in Plymouth County in southeastern Massachusetts. It's about 35 miles south of Boston, and has a population of approximately 15,000. Duxbury has an impressive history. In 1627, land along the coast was allotted to some of the most influential leaders of Plymouth Colony for farming, including Captain Myles Standish. He lived in what was known as "the Nook," which is now called Standish Shore. Some settlers first came and worked the land only in the summer and returned to Plymouth in the winter. Eventually, however, they stayed, and soon a town was established. It is said the town was named Duxbury by Standish after his childhood home in England. From the late 1700s until the mid-1800s, the town became a major shipbuilding center, until ships became too big for the shallow bay. Today, Duxbury is well-known for its oysters and it's the sixth largest cranberry producer in the state of Massachusetts. There are several ponds and bogs in the town and Duxbury Beach is known as one of the most beautiful in the state. There are also several sanctuaries, and a conservation area located in Duxbury. Other attractions in town include the Art Complex Museum and the Old Burying Ground on Chestnut Street, which contains graves of some of the earliest settlers.

Southeastern Massachusetts , along the coast, has a continental climate with maritime influences. Some areas are classified as humid continental, and others are humid subtropical. Summers are warm and humid with the possibility of thunderstorms. Occasionally these storms are severe with hail and heavy downpours. Winters are cold and snowy, with most snowfall occurring between December and March. Spring and autumn are mild, but changeable depending on the wind direction and jet stream. Cool sea breezes are common, especially in spring. Fog is also commonplace, especially in spring and early summer. Tropical storms or hurricanes are possible, especially in early autumn, but not common.
