Harwich
is a resort and residential community located on the south side of the Cape Cod peninsula, with an extensive shoreline on Nantucket Sound. It's situated just before the elbow of the Cape, and is about 12 miles from Hyannis and 82 miles southeast of Boston. Seven "villages" make up the town of Harwich - they are Harwich Center, Harwich Port, Pleasant Lake, North Harwich, South Harwich, East Harwich and West Harwich. The town of Harwich was settled in 1665 as an agricultural and maritime village with emphasis on the whaling industry. With the discovery of oil, the town's economy shifted to cod fishing, and with the decline of the fishing industry by the latter part of the 19th century, residents turned to the development of cranberry bogs and tourism. The first resort hotel in Harwich opened in 1880. Commercial, motel and condominium development has steadily increased along the Route 28 corridor, but the town still retains much of its 19th century character, including period Portuguese farmhouses. Harwich has three protected harbors, perfect for fishing, scuba diving, boating or sailing. Other activities in the area include hiking, biking, kayaking, golf, birdwatching or sightseeing along the stretches of unspoiled woods, ponds and cranberry bogs. The seven villages of Harwich offer unique shopping opportunities, historic sites, cozy bed & breakfasts and old-fashioned country inns. Dining ranges from take-out to elegant seafood restaurants. Cultural offerings in Harwich includes the Brooks Academy Museum displaying historic artifacts local to this area, performing arts at the Harwich Junior Theater, music at the Town Band Concerts and various outdoor art shows.

Harwich Weather & Climate

The Cape Cod region has a four season climate with maritime influences. The weather here is generally more moderate than inland Massachusetts. Extreme conditions such as blizzards and hurricanes are possible, but not typical. Due to the moderating affect of the ocean, temperatures in the Cape Cod region are usually a few degrees cooler in summer and a few degrees warmer in winter. Spring comes late and is chilly, but autumn is mild and remains warmer than places further inland. The Cape Cod region has the lowest precipitation of anyplace in New England. Tropical storms occur once every 5 or 6 years, with very high winds and heavy rain. On average, the area is hit by a hurricane once every 11 or 12 years.
