Sandisfield
is a town located in rural Berkshire County in southwestern Massachusetts. The population is approximately 800 full time residents. Sandisfield is the largest town by size in the county of Berkshire. It's in an isolated, heavily forested area, and contains three villages along Route 57. Sandisfield was settled around 1750 as Housatonic Township Number 4. At one time it thrived as an agricultural and mill town. Several small industries were added to the town by the mid-1800s, but unfortunately the town suffered when a railroad planned for the area failed to prosper. Today, Sandisfield is located in one of the most scenic, but least populated areas of the state. It's home to the Sandisfield State Forest and York Lake, which offers boating, fishing, swimming, horseback riding, picnicking and wintertime skiing. Also nearby are Spectacle Pond and the West Lake Recreational Area. West Lake is popular for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter, and summer activities include fishing, boating, hunting, and horseback riding. Sandisfield's population increases in summer due to tourists who come to visit the bucolic New England town and state forest. The countryside around Sandisfield is quintessential New England, with peaceful old farms, spectacular scenery, apple orchards and historic inns.

Southwest Massachusetts has four very distinct seasons and is classified as having a humid continental climate. Summers are hot and humid and winters are cold and snowy. Spring and autumn are mild, with autumn being the sunnier of the two seasons. A humid continental climate is marked by large seasonal temperature variances. It can be as hot has 90 degrees in summer and as cold as zero degrees in winter. The temperature difference increases the further inland one goes, away from the moderating influence of the ocean. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer, with average rainfall at about 40 inches per year. Snowfall can exceed 100 inches in a year. Other severe weather includes nor'easters, blizzards, and ice storms.
