Osterville
is a village within the city of Barnstable, which is located on the "bicep area" of Cape Cod, bordered by Cape Cod Bay on the north and Nantucket Sound on the south. Situated on the south side of Barnstable, Osterville is primarily residential with several inlets and harbors for fishing and boating. It also contains a small business district, including several quaint shops and restaurants. In the summertime, the village of Osterville thrives due to a predominantly seasonal mix of residents who maintain second homes in the area while spending most of their time in the Greater Boston Area. Recreational activities in Osterville consist of golf, tennis, boating and fishing. At night, the village boasts an unusually busy nightlife. The city of Barnstable includes seven villages within its' borders - each with its' own unique character and attractions. Along with Osterville, they include Centerville, Hyannis, Marstons Mills, Cotuit, West Barnstable and Barnstable Village. Hyannis is considered the "Homeport of Cape Cod," and offers the largest concentration of hotels, restaurants, shops and businesses. Both Barnstable Village and West Barnstable have retained their Old World Colonial charm with old restored sea captains' homes, cranberry bogs, salt marshes and the beautiful Barnstable Harbor. Several museums are located in Barnstable, including the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, Cape Cod Children's Museum, Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and the Cape Cod Discovery Museum.

The Cape Cod region has a four season climate with maritime influences. The weather here is generally more moderate than inland Massachusetts. Extreme conditions such as blizzards and hurricanes are possible, but not typical. Due to the moderating affect of the ocean, temperatures in the Cape Cod region are usually a few degrees cooler in summer and a few degrees warmer in winter. Spring comes late and is chilly, but autumn is mild and remains warmer than places further inland. The Cape Cod region has the lowest precipitation of anyplace in New England. Tropical storms occur once every 5 or 6 years, with very high winds and heavy rain. On average, the area is hit by a hurricane once every 11 or 12 years.
