Onset
is a charming Victorian village and harbor located at the mouth of the Cape Cod Canal in the town of Wareham, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 1,292 residents. Described as "a quiet seaside village," Onset is off the beaten path, yet central to everything in the Buzzards Bay/Cape Cod region. Things to do in the area include whale watching, taking a ferry to the Cape and Islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, fishing, boating, sailing, golf, tennis, bicycling, touring the Victorian mansions along South Boulevard or enjoying summer concerts at The Bandstand in the park. Local attractions include On-I-set Wigwam, the Old Onset Fire Station, Onset Bluffs, Onset Pier, Wicket Island and Onset Island. Kenny's Salt Water Taffy is located near the Town Pier and has been a landmark eatery since around 1895. With its' convenient location, Onset makes it easy to visit all of the area's popular attractions such as Plimouth Plantation, Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Woods Hole Science Aquarium. All of the natural beauty, history, arts and entertainment of the entire Cape Cod region is available from the town of Onset.

The Cape Cod region has a four season climate with maritime influences. The weather here is generally more moderate than inland Massachusetts. Extreme conditions such as blizzards and hurricanes are possible, but not typical. Due to the moderating affect of the ocean, temperatures in the Cape Cod region are usually a few degrees cooler in summer and a few degrees warmer in winter. Spring comes late and is chilly, but autumn is mild and remains warmer than places further inland. The Cape Cod region has the lowest precipitation of anyplace in New England. Tropical storms occur once every 5 or 6 years, with very high winds and heavy rain. On average, the area is hit by a hurricane once every 11 or 12 years.
