Hancock
is a quiet, rural community located in the heart of the Berkshire Hills and is primarily supported by tourism. To the east lies 6,600 acres of land that is part of a state forest, and to the north is a 500-acre Audubon wildlife sanctuary. With a current population of around 800, Hancock was established in 1790 and named for John Hancock, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence. Shakers settled in the area in the 19th century and called the community "The City of Peace." Today, the town is home to a "living history," non-profit museum of Shaker life that offers tours, exhibitions and hands-on activities. The beautifully restored Shaker village is set on 1,200 acres of farmland, woods and pasture and has a premier collection of Shaker buildings and artifacts. The Hancock Shaker Village is open year round - with two distinct operating seasons. The Self-Exploration Tour Season begins in early April and runs through the weekend following Columbus Day. The Guided Tour Season begins the Monday following Columbus Day and runs through early April. During the Guided Tour Season, not all of the buildings and activities are available that are open during the Self-Guided tour season. The village of Hancock is also home to a campground, a nudist camp and one of the largest ski areas in Massachusetts.

Western New York, including The Berkshires, has a moderate four-season climate. The first significant snowfall usually occurs in December, but it varies from year to year. Some years there is no snow or ice until after the first of the new year, and the temperatures near The Hudson River stay quite mild. March is the month to look for the first signs of spring, although cool temps can linger throughout the month. Summers are hazy, warm and humid. September can be mixed with either clear, cool Canadian air or humid, warm air with intense downpours. October is possibly the most beautiful month in the Berkshires with warm, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. Perfect weather for enjoying the foliage. Typically, colors peak the first three weeks of October.
