Acton
is located in northeast Massachusetts approximately 21 miles west of Boston. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,924. In 2009 and again in 2011, Acton was named the "16th Best Place to Live" in the small towns in the USA category by Money Magazine. Classified as a "suburban community," Acton's population has tripled since 1980, but it retains its quaint New England atmosphere, with a traditional town center and town green, tree-lined streets and old stone walls. The town of Acton is home to several parks that offer hiking trails, playgrounds, picnic tables, tennis courts, ball fields, basketball courts, wetlands and forests. The Acton Arboretum contains 54 acres of meadows, woods, ponds, swamps, old apple orchards and a bog. It features a 19th century herb garden, a wildflower garden, butterfly garden, hosta garden and rhododendron garden. Three adjoining conservation areas in north Acton total over 400 acres and contains trails that are part of the Bay Circuit Trail and Greenway, a planned hiking path starting in Ispwich, circling Boston and ending in Duxbury. Other attractions in Acton include The Discovery Museums - which are two separate science museums on the same site; the Children's Discovery Museum (for younger children) and the Science Discovery Museum for older children. For history buffs, there's Jones Tavern (c. 1732,) the Faulkner House and Mills (c. 1702,) and Hosmer House, a Revolutionary War-era home.

Northeast Massachusetts has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Rainfall averages 40 inches and is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year. Snowfall can exceed 100 inches in a season. Winter is cold in the northeast coastal region, but much colder further inland. Springs are usually wet and cloudy. Autumn is mild and comes earlier than other regions in the U.S. Extreme weather such as severe thunderstorms, nor'easters and hurricanes are a possibility. Hurricanes generally weaken to a tropical storm by the time they reach the state, however. A nor'easter is a winter storm with winds coming from the northeast that can bring heavy snow and strong winds.
