Northfield is a small rural community located on the New Hampshire border in northwestern Massachusetts. The town has easy access to Amherst and Northampton, Brattleboro, Vermont and Keene, New Hampshire. The town of Northfield is a peaceful blend of rolling farmland, forested hills, streams and wetlands. It is the only town in Massachusetts situated on both sides of the Connecticut River. As of the 2000 census, the population of Northfield was 2,951 residents. The town is the site of Northfield Mountain, which is a four-season recreation facility situated along the mountainside of a seven-mile long stretch of the Connecticut River. Northfield Mountain offers cross-country skiing, 26 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, camping and picnicking facilities, canoeing, kayaking, riverboat cruises and charters on the 60-seat Quinnetukut II. Public environmental and recreation programs are offered at the Northfield Mountain Visitor Center and school environmental and recreational programs are also available at Northfield Mountain. Northfield is considered one of the cultural centers of Franklin County and is the site of the Bolger Arts Center. The town also offers a number of historical sites and antique shops, restaurants and other services for visitors.

Northfield Weather & Climate

Central Massachusetts has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are cold and snowy and summers are warm and humid. There is a large seasonal temperature variance in central Massachusetts, because places further inland do not have the moderating influence of the ocean. West-central Massachusetts has colder winters and cooler summers than areas along the coast. Summer thunderstorms are common, on average about 30 per year. Nor-easters (winter storms with winds coming from the Northeast) can drop a foot or more of snow. In summer, central Massachusetts is slightly more humid than the coast. In autumn, the air becomes crisp and sunny days bring bright and colorful foliage to the dense forests.
