Ashfield
is located in the southwestern corner of Franklin County in the Berkshire Foothills of western Massachusetts. With a population of approximately 1,800, Ashfield is 40 square miles in size and for years has had a theme that "small is better." The town of Ashfield has an interesting agricultural past. From 1812 to 1830, it was a major center of the peppermint industry, with several hundred acres of peppermint under cultivation and yielding up to forty pounds of oil, per acre, at $8 per pound. Other small industries during the 19th century included pottery making (an exhibit of which is at the Smithsonian Institute), production of wooden medical splints, a creamery and several sawmills, gristmills, woodworking mills, tanneries and maple sugaring. Of these, only maple sugaring continued to flourish and today Ashfield is well known for its maple products. In the past couple of decades, many people have discovered Ashfield's cool breezes and picturesque vistas. It has become a haven for artisans, craftspeople, writers, artists, tradesmen and others looking for a haven from the hectic city life. This move into the town of Ashfield has turned it into a thriving cultural center. The town of Ashfield is bordered by Goshen and Cumington on the south and southwest, Plainfield on the west, Hawley on the northwest, Buckland on the north, and Conway on the east. Ashfield is 20 miles southwest of Greenfield, 109 miles west of Boston and only 175 miles from New York City.

Central Massachusetts has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are cold and snowy and summers are warm and humid. There is a large seasonal temperature variance in central Massachusetts, because places further inland do not have the moderating influence of the ocean. West-central Massachusetts has colder winters and cooler summers than areas along the coast. Summer thunderstorms are common, on average about 30 per year. Nor-easters (winter storms with winds coming from the Northeast) can drop a foot or more of snow. In summer, central Massachusetts is slightly more humid than the coast. In autumn, the air becomes crisp and sunny days bring bright and colorful foliage to the dense forests.
