Mt-Washington
is a beautiful little mountain village located in the extreme southwest corner of the state. It is an old town, first settled in 1692 and officially incorporated in 1779. Mt. Washington is home to Mt. Everett (the second highest peak in Massachusetts,) and legendary Bash Bish Falls. As of the 2000 census, the village had a population of just 130 residents. Bash Bish Falls State Park contains the state's most dramatic waterfall, where the cascading water tumbles down over a series of gorges, finally dropping 60 feet into a sparkling pool below. Fishing is allowed and there are hiking/marked trails and footpaths leading to the cascades. One of the most spectacular times to visit is at the end of June when the mountain laurel is in full bloom. Mt. Washington is located in the heart of one of the most beautiful areas of the state, near over twenty state parks and forests that offer swimming, hiking, biking, horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, snowmobiling and cross country skiing. Nearby attractions include the boutiques and antique shops in the charming town of Great Barrington, the Hancock Shaker Village and Park Square Historic District in nearby Pittsfield, Tanglewood and the Norman Rockwell Museum and Ski Butternut Family Ski Resort.

Southwest Massachusetts has four very distinct seasons and is classified as having a humid continental climate. Summers are hot and humid and winters are cold and snowy. Spring and autumn are mild, with autumn being the sunnier of the two seasons. A humid continental climate is marked by large seasonal temperature variances. It can be as hot has 90 degrees in summer and as cold as zero degrees in winter. The temperature difference increases the further inland one goes, away from the moderating influence of the ocean. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer, with average rainfall at about 40 inches per year. Snowfall can exceed 100 inches in a year. Other severe weather includes nor'easters, blizzards, and ice storms.
